Antidote for “Paradise Now”
In Paradise Now, Reines asks: “What happens when poetry is pushed to the very limits of the human imagination? Are our minds vast enough to encompass true knowledge of the cosmos? Of ourselves?” Invisible College may have the questions, but Opaque College has the answers. The primary answer is that perhaps the human mind can stretch with poetry, can encompass at least some portion of the cosmos and the truth of ourselves, but that doesn’t mean that it should. In fact, at Opaque College, we are firm with our students that the mind should not stretch beyond its natural walls. Too often, we see students whose minds have been sprained and they have fallen into Satan’s territory of deep depression. For as Milton’s Satan says, the mind “Can make a Heav’n of Hell, a Hell of Heav’n.”
A school district in Florida banned Paradise Lost shortly after Invisible College released Paradise Now, which can’t be a coincidence…
In this course, students come at the study of origin and creation from a different angle—envisioning what the world would look like, stretching back from our time to Milton’s and far before, if Satan had never fallen from heaven. At minimum, none of us would have to confront his presence in the culture or in ourselves, or think about how sexy he is.
